In an advert that appeared on major dailies, the Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Anne Amadi, asked qualified candidates to participate in the process of identifying the man or woman to succeed Willy Mutunga.
“JSC anticipates that the recruitment process shall take about four months given the statutory timelines guiding the process and expects the new Chief Justice to be in office in October, 2016.” Amadi said.
Following this announcement, a number of Kenya judges, scholars and academicians have applied for the top job.
One of the scholars who has applied is renowned human rights Professor, Makau Mutua.
According to sources, Makau Mutua, who is a former Distinguished Professor of Law at Buffalo Law School in New York, applied last week and he has the blessings of Mutunga and influential lawyer, Ahmednassir Abdullahi.
Mutua,who is a close ally of CORD leader, Raila Odinga, went to exile in 1990s and has been lecturing different Universities in the US and United Kingdom.
Makau has been making headlines in Kenya over the International Criminal Court (ICC) cases facing President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy, William Ruto.
He has been a vocal critic of the Jubilee administration.
