Kenyan troops serving under AMISOM to bring peace to Somalia on Christmas eve were surprised at the arrival of their boss, General Samson Mwathethe and Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo.
The two boosted the morale of soldiers at KDF Camp in Kismayo by forfeiting Christmas with their families to spend time with the brave troops.
“My visit to Kismayu is a thanksgiving tour to soldiers for the great work they have done over the years,” Omamo said adding that she wanted to visit them earlier but other issues held her.
“But thank God I am here for thanksgiving, asanteni asenteni sana (thank, thank very much) for your courage and strenuous sacrifice. We appreciate and value you greatly, you are exceptional. It is not easy to be in the KDF, to face the force that you have been facing. To fight for freedom and justice far away from home,” she addressed the troops directly.
On his part, General Mwathethe urged the soldiers to remain apolitical ahead of the General Election.
“Elections in Kenya is an event, Kenya will remain solid after the polls. As KDF, we should remain in the barracks. I know the challenges we will face in 2017, but let us do our mandate,” he stated firmly.
Mwathethe also told the soldiers that those who will be near the polling centres will be allowed to vote.
The general assured the gallant troops that they were not forgotten as they served in the foreign land.
