Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho has been linked to an international cybercrime syndicate arrested on Monday March 6, 2017 by Special Crime Prevention Unit (SCPU).
The gang, which was also arrested for conspiring to manipulate the IEBC system during the elections, has one member who knew Joho, State House official Dennis Itumbi said on social media.
According to a police report, the suspects were possibly planning to hack into the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) to alter the results of the poll.
Joho has not responded to the allegations yet.
“The gang is working with insiders and relatives of “prominent politicians”. The crooks had formed an international band that installed malware into the systems that allowed them to take control of the institutions’ computers and steal what police sources said would run into hundreds of millions,” wrote Daily Nation who first reported the story
